CICA announces case study topics for 2025-2026 student essay contest

The Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) has announced the case study topics, ‘Captive Insurance Solutions for Today’s Risk Management Challenges’, for its 2025-2026 essay contest. Finalists will receive cash prizes, present their papers at the 2026 CICA International Conference on 8-10 March at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa in California, in addition to the publication of each essay written by the finalist teams by Captive Insurance Times. The first case study asks competitors to devise a solution for Diamond Cruise Line — a global touring company with 10 ships, 15,000 employees, and the capacity to hold 3,000 guests on each — who face increasing insurance premiums and limited coverage options from traditional insurers, as such opting to explore captive insurance to manage their risks relating to safety, weather, operating, employees, technology, and more. Secondly, The Corner Basket, a regional grocery store chain, is preparing to expand into two more states with 100 new locations, causing it to undertake a comprehensive review of its insurance programme, with the chain facing challenges including workplace safety concerns, supply chain disruptions, regulatory compliance requirements, and cybersecurity risks. Lastly, the not-for-profit Newbies Baseball League partners with schools throughout the Midwest, with 7,200 players across four states, and is growing, with the league looking at exploring captives in order to manage property damages for the ballparks they use, general liability, theft, crime coverage, and auto liability for new transportation buses. Two-person student teams will select one of the aforementioned case studies, designing and analysing a captive structure to implement and address their chosen study’s prime insurance risks and explain the rationale behind their conclusions. Each case study was designed by the contest sponsor, Hylant Global Captive Solutions, whose team will provide mentorship for the students. CICA President Dan Towle believes the “phenomenal growth of the industry has provided more opportunities than ever for young professionals to enter the captive industry”. He adds: “Our CICA Essay Contest gives college students an exciting way to learn about the diverse career opportunities this rewarding and fast paced industry offers.” Anne Marie Towle, CEO of Hylant Global Risk and Captive Solutions, says: “It is so important to engage students with this wider exposure to captive insurance and help pique career interest right out of high school and college.” She views the essay contest as an opportunity for students “to challenge themselves and see how much they can grow in this industry”. John Savage, publisher for Captive Insurance Times, says: "As we begin our fourth year of partnership with CICA, supporting their essay contest continues to be a true highlight for us.” “This initiative isn't just about a competition; it's about opening doors for a new generation of talent. We believe these students represent the future of the captive industry, and we're excited to showcase their work in Captive Insurance Times." Contest details, entry requirements, full case study descriptions, and additional information is available on the CICA website.
