Sompo Holdings has confirmed the acquisition of Aspen Insurance Holdings for approximately US$3.5 billion, in a deal aimed at enhancing Sompo’s portfolio diversification and global scale. Due to dwindling domestic financial market growth, Sompo has spent the past several years expanding its property and casualty (P&C) business outside the Japanese market. The acquisition will allow Sompo to access its untapped markets in the Americas, the UK, Europe, and APAC, as it intends to integrate Aspen’s operations with its own overseas insurance business. James Shea, CEO of Sompo, comments: “Strategic acquisitions have been a key part of our growth plan to build a robust and diversified global P&C platform, and Aspen represents an excellent opportunity at the right time in the market cycle.” Furthermore, Aspen will provide access to the alternative reinsurance market through its Aspen Capital Markets (ACM), which aims to enhance Sompo’s approach to capital optimisation, and to provide greater flexibility to manage risk exposure and reduce earnings volatility.
