AXA XL appoints Ed Totten as Head of Construction Casualty

AXA XL has promoted Ed Totten to head of Construction Casualty, bringing together its primary and excess casualty lines for contractors under a single leadership structure. Totten, who has been with AXA XL since 2010, previously served as senior vice president and profit center head for excess construction. He brings more than 20 years of experience in construction and casualty insurance, including leadership roles at Zurich and AIG. AXA XL says promotion supports its strategy to address growing complexity in the construction sector — including larger projects, rising legal exposures, and evolving contractual demands — by streamlining decision-making and reducing coverage gaps for clients. Jon Tellekamp, AXA XL's chief underwriting officer for Construction and Energy in the Americas, says: "Casualty insurance is more vital than ever for contractors today. The growth in project size, legal risks, and contractual obligations underscores the need for a unified approach. “By aligning our primary and excess construction insurance under Ed's leadership, we can provide our clients with fewer coverage gaps and more efficient decision-making, ultimately strengthening their risk resilience.” In his new role, Totten will oversee the insurer’s casualty construction underwriting team, with a focus on enhancing risk resilience for contractors and driving continued growth across the North America portfolio. Tellekamp adds: “Known for his strategic leadership and deep industry knowledge, Ed has built a reputation for fostering strong relationships with brokers and clients alike. “His commitment to excellence and his forward-thinking approach makes him an ideal leader to drive AXA XL's casualty construction underwriting team into its next chapter of growth and success.”
