AIG appoints Gopal as APAC Chief Risk Officer

American International Group (AIG) has named Sandeep Gopal as chief risk officer (CRO) for its APAC operations. Gopal will lead the insurer’s enterprise risk management strategy across the region, with a focus on strengthening risk governance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting long-term business growth. He will collaborate closely with Chris Colahan, regional president for APAC at AIG General Insurance, to promote operational excellence and innovation. Gopal joins AIG after five years at Fairfirst Insurance, where he most recently served as CEO. Prior to that, he held roles including deputy CEO and chief strategy officer at the same company. His previous experience also includes senior leadership positions at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, where he served as director CRO Asia Pacific and CEO of Swiss Re International SE Hong Kong. Earlier in his career, he held roles at Allied World, RSA, Barclays, Protiviti and Erix Advisors. Diego Rios, chief risk officer international at AIG, says: “Sandeep will be instrumental in leading the enterprise risk management strategy in the region, and will work closely with Chris Colahan, fostering a culture of operational excellence and innovation. “With over 23 years of experience in the insurance industry, Sandeep brings a breadth of experience that ranges from risk management and strategy to general management.” Gopal comments: “It is an honour to be part of such an amazing company. For me, APAC is the most exciting region to work in and with Chris Colahan at the helm, the best is yet to come. “I am truly humbled by the welcome I have received. I look forward to building a resilient business in APAC.”
