Mosaic launches AI lab and engineer programme

Mosaic Insurance launches an AI Lab and forward deployed engineer programme to accelerate adoption of artificial intelligence across its business functions. The lab is a new unit working across the company’s businesses to develop and deploy in-house artificial intelligence capabilities. Senior leadership prioritises use cases aligned with Mosaic’s automation strategy, with the lab focused on delivery and measurable outcomes across underwriting, finance and global operations. Mosaic hired its first cohort of specialists in artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science this summer. Three are graduates of the London School of Economics and one of the University of Nottingham, and all four join the company’s London office. The engineers work directly with underwriters, claims handlers and operations teams, from understanding a business problem to solving it in production. Every agent and model the lab deploys is validated against business outcomes, subject to human-in-the-loop oversight and governed by Mosaic’s AI acceptable use policy. Mitch Blaser, co-chief executive officer of Mosaic, says: "Most of the market has spent two years running pilots. We decided early that pilots were not the goal. Our AI Lab exists to build AI that runs in production, on real data, solving real problems." Krishnan Ethirajan, chief digital and AI officer at Mosaic, says: "You can run a pilot in a corner and declare success; what you cannot do is change how an institution underwrites, reserves, and makes decisions in isolation. Our engineers are embedded within our front- and back-office operations because that's the only way AI actually changes anything." Usha Badrinath, chief data officer at Mosaic, says the lab reuses artificial intelligence infrastructure across projects, draws on the company’s own policy and loss data, and is trained on Mosaic’s knowledge of how the business runs.
