DLA Piper appoints Gary Anderson as a partner in the insurance practice in Boston. Anderson joins from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), where he served as chief executive officer. Anderson was named to the role in March 2024 and took up the post in May that year, standing down in October 2025. Before the NAIC, Anderson spent more than a decade at the Massachusetts Division of Insurance, taking up the post of commissioner of insurance in October 2017 and holding it until May 2024, having arrived as first deputy commissioner in February 2014. Anderson has also held international regulatory positions, serving as vice chair of the executive committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and chairing the IAIS policy development committee, and chaired the NAIC international insurance relations (G) committee from 2019. Earlier in his career, Anderson was policy adviser and senior counsel in the office of the Massachusetts Senate president from 2012 to 2014, and general counsel to the financial services committee of the Massachusetts Senate from 2007 to 2012. That insurance career began in 1999 with a regional carrier in the north-western US. At DLA Piper, Anderson advises insurers, reinsurers and other market participants on regulatory and compliance matters, disputes and insurance-related investment activity. The firm points to the senior regulatory experience and industry relationships Anderson brings to insurance entities and to financial institutions serving insurance sector clients. DLA Piper is a global law firm whose insurance practice spans transactional and M&A work, regulatory and distribution matters, sanctions and compliance, coverage claims and dispute resolution, restructuring, insurtech, and data privacy and cyber.
