North Carolina insurance commissioner Mike Causey names Chuck Myers as chief deputy commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI), effective 1 October. Myers takes over from Jackie Obusek, who announces her retirement after 30 years at the department. He joins from the Louisiana Department of Insurance, where he serves three and a half years as deputy commissioner overseeing the Office of Property and Casualty. He chairs the Louisiana Auto Insurance Plan, restructures the Louisiana Fortified Homes Program and leads the title insurance working group at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Before Louisiana, Myers holds insurance regulation and law enforcement roles in Virginia, managing the real estate settlement agents investigations section of the Virginia Bureau of Insurance. An investigation he conducts leads to a conviction and the return of nearly US$200,000 to consumers, and earns the Virginia State Police Fraud Fighters Award. He serves before that as a special agent accountant with the Virginia State Police, leading complex white-collar investigations covering elected officials, financial crimes, fraud and forensic audits. He documents crime scenes as a certified crime scene analyst and trains law enforcement personnel. Myers spends more than 20 years as a licensed insurance agent in Florida and Virginia. He remains a chartered property casualty underwriter, a certified fraud examiner, a senior professional insurance regulator and a sworn law enforcement officer. Causey says: "I believe Chuck will be a real asset to our mission at NCDOI of protecting consumers and fighting fraud. His impressive insurance, accounting, law enforcement and leadership experience will make the transition of losing Jackie much smoother." Myers says: "It’s a big honour joining the team at NCDOI. I’m humbled by the opportunity to come to such a great place and carry forward the incredible legacy established by the Commissioner, Jackie, and the hardworking NCDOI employees. I cannot wait to get to work for the Department and the people of North Carolina."
