Matthew Gilpin joins AkinovA, the technology-led insurance and reinsurance platform, as group chief operating officer. Operating across London and Bermuda, AkinovA works with large corporates, reinsurers, brokers and institutional capital providers to help transfer, finance and manage complex corporate risk more efficiently, while improving underwriting information and creating clearer access to long-term capacity. Gilpin moves to the role from Westmorland Capital, where he spent 16 years as director and advisor. In recent years, he had been advising AkinovA on strategy, operations and structure, including on fundraising and regulatory matters. In his new position, Gilpin is responsible for scaling the operating model required for the next phase of AkinovA's development. His remit covers governance, risk management, institutional readiness, cross-jurisdictional execution, technology-enabled workflows and the operational discipline needed to support long-term growth. AkinovA's proposition centres on A1Policy™, its proprietary, technology-enabled, cross-class, multi-year excess umbrella framework. Designed for large corporates with sophisticated risk management functions and captive insurance structures, A1Policy is intended to sit above existing insurance and captive arrangements, complementing broker and carrier relationships rather than replacing them. The framework aims to reduce gaps and overlaps in coverage, support captive capital efficiency and create a clearer pathway for corporate risk to access reinsurance and capital markets capacity over time. AkinovA's wider operating model combines proprietary policy architecture, managing general underwriter capabilities, secure digital risk data infrastructure, advanced analytics and regulated risk-transfer infrastructure. The platform is aimed at CFOs, treasurers, captive owners, risk managers and chief risk officers contending with retained tail risk, earnings protection, captive capital efficiency and long-term risk finance planning, as exposures become more interconnected, data-intensive and capital-sensitive. Gilpin brings more than three decades of experience across financial services, fund management and law. Prior to Westmorland Capital, he was managing director of Lodge Quai Advisors LLP and group COO and general counsel of the wider Lodge Quai group, a real estate fund management business based in London, Jersey and Luxembourg. He also chaired the investment committee and held the group's chief ESG and sustainability officer role. Earlier in his career, Gilpin was director of CEE equity capital markets and syndicate at CAIB Investmentbank AG, working on IPOs, secondary offerings and privatisations across technology, banking and energy. He was called to the Bar in 1993, with pupillage covering Lloyd's litigation, shipping, commodities and banking. He also co-founded UK maritime situational awareness firm SiriusInsight.AI and quantum-inspired computing company InfinityQ Technology, and began his career as a Royal Navy officer. Commenting on his appointment, Gilpin says: "I have been advising AkinovA for some time and have been impressed by the ambition of the business, the quality of the team and the clarity of the market problem it is addressing." He adds that he looks forward to working with chief executive Henri Winand, advisor Dennis Mahoney and the wider AkinovA team and its corporate, reinsurance, broker and capital partners "as the Group moves from platform development into scaled execution".
