The South Carolina Captive Insurance Association (SCCIA) is set to host its annual Captive Managers Breakfast with the South Carolina Department of Insurance (SCDOI) director, Michael Wise. Taking place on 20 March at the Harbour Club WestEdge in Charleston, the event provides a forum for SCCIA members to communicate and resolve common industry issues. The gathering is part of the "Friendly Society Restored" (TFSR) series, which facilitates education and serves as a resource for the state's captive community. The series draws its name from America’s first insurance company, the "Friendly Society", which was established in Charleston in 1735. South Carolina’s captive industry was established in June 2000 when former governor Jim Hodges signed the state's captive law. Since then, the domicile has focused on developing a qualified regulatory team and a pleasurable business environment. John O’Brien, TFSR patriarch and founder of the first captive management company in the state, notes that South Carolina has met the challenges of providing high-quality regulatory oversight to an “aggressively growing captive industry”. O’Brien says: “The importance of an attractive domicile cannot be overstated when appealing to potential captive. Form must follow function. Because of the support of the local governmental bodies we are finding that we are indeed becoming a world class captive domicile.” The SCCIA has also confirmed dates for upcoming events later in the year, including an oyster roast on 8 October and subsequent TFSR breakfasts on 9 October and 11 December. Registration for the March breakfast remains open until 19 March via the association's website. For more information on the forum and upcoming events, visit: The Friendly Society Restored
