Cayman reports record licensing trend for second year

The Insurance Managers Association of Cayman (IMAC) reports a strong overall performance for the jurisdiction’s captive insurance industry in 2025. According to licensing statistics released by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), 10 new international insurer licences were issued in Q4 2025. This brings the total number of new licences for the year to 42, matching the previous year’s total and continuing a decade-long trend of record-high licensing. The Q4 licences include three B(i)s, four B(iii)s, one Class C and two Class D licences. At the close of 2025, the Cayman Islands is home to 720 Class B, C and D insurance companies. These entities write US51billioninpremiumsandholdUS176 billion in total assets, marking increases of 24 per cent and 15 per cent respectively compared to 2024. James Trundle, chair of IMAC, says: “Cayman’s continued growth reflects the jurisdiction’s robust regulatory framework, business friendly environment and depth of professional expertise. The collaborative and pragmatic approach taken by CIMA has been instrumental in supporting this momentum, and we are grateful for their ongoing engagement and responsiveness within the industry.” Traditional single-parent captives, licensed as Class B(i), saw a growth of 19 new licences across various industries throughout 2025. Third-party writers licensed as B(iii), which include some reinsurance entities, also recorded 19 new licences. The jurisdiction added two licences for Class C fully collateralised transactions and two for Class D open market reinsurers. This growth in reinsurance entities is expected to continue into 2026 and will be a focus at the CIRCA ReConnect conference in April.
