Smith + Howard acquires Bauknight Pietras & Stormer

Smith + Howard, an accounting and advisory firm, has acquired Bauknight Pietras & Stormer (BPS). The acquisition of the South Carolina-based firm expands Smith + Howard’s regional presence and strengthens its footprint across the Southeastern United States. The move extends the firm's reach into the captive insurance and telecommunications industries, while bolstering its presence in shared sectors such as construction, real estate and manufacturing. It also enhances the firm's advisory capabilities in forensic accounting and litigation support. Sean Taylor, CEO of Smith + Howard, says: “This acquisition reflects our continued focus on thoughtful, high-quality growth that expands both our geographic reach and our service depth. “BPS brings specialised expertise, strong client relationships, and a team that shares our values and commitment to exceptional client service. Together, we are well-positioned to deliver even greater value to our clients while continuing to invest in our people and our platform.” Jay Swearingen, managing shareholder at BPS, adds: “Joining Smith + Howard marks an exciting next chapter for our firm and our clients. This partnership strengthens our ability to ensure the long-term success of our employees and our clients by expanding the services, resources, and expertise we bring to the table.” Following the close of the transaction, BPS will begin transitioning to the Smith + Howard brand. Clients will continue to work with their existing service teams while gaining access to a broader suite of audit, tax and specialised consulting services. Based in Columbia, BPS was established in 1991 and employs nearly 100 professional staff. The transaction follows Smith + Howard’s recent acquisition of Horton, Lee & Burnett in Birmingham, Alabama. Terms of the BPS deal were not disclosed.
