The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has appointed six insurance regulators from around the world to the Spring International Fellows Program. Participants include regulators from the Czech Republic, India, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan, while the host jurisdictions will be Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Louisiana, Missouri, and Nevada.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the program, which was established in 2004 to advance working relationships with foreign market regulators—emphasising the exchange of regulatory techniques and technology. The NAIC Fellows Program is conducted twice a year.
The Fellows participate in a week-long orientation programme in Kansas City, focusing on the broad principles of insurance regulation in the US. Each fellow then travels to a different state and works in technical areas of their specialisation under the supervision of a state insurance department staff member, who serves as a mentor and host. The programme will conclude at NAIC's Securities Valuation Office (SVO) in New York with briefings on asset valuations, securities, derivatives, and emerging trends.
With the completion of the 2014 spring programme, a total of 204 fellows from 28 countries will have participated in the training programme, while 37 US jurisdictions have hosted foreign regulators.
