CICA announces essay contest winners

The Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) has announced the winners of its College Student Essay Contest.

Rachel Claire Gibson and Ella Pernsteiner received first-place honours and a US$2,500 prize.

The winners were announced during the opening session of the CICA 2025 International Conference at the J.W. Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa. The contest is sponsored by Hylant Global Captive Solutions (Hylant GCS).

Second place went to Matthew Sharretts and Samuel Brockelman from Connecticut College, both of whom received a US$1,500 prize.

Third place, with a US$1,000 prize, went to Isabella Martinez and Skilee Soto from St. Mary’s University.

Commenting on the winners, CICA President Dan Towle says: “I continue to be impressed with the development of the students’ captive knowledge as they progress through the essay contest process.

“Their growing interest in captive insurance is exciting to witness as they take a deep dive into their essay contest case studies.”

Anne Marie Towle, CEO, Global Risk & Captive Solutions, Hylant GCS, adds: “As the sponsor of the CICA Student Essay Contest, we are honoured to contribute to the growth and development of these students.

“This initiative aligns with Hylant’s commitment to fostering education and encouraging innovation in captive insurance, and we are proud to invest in our industry’s future leaders.”

In addition to cash prizes, the students will present their essays during an education session at the CICA Conference, which will be published by CICA Essay Contest Media Partner Captive Insurance Times.
