CICA announces 2025 top essay contest finalists

The Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) has unveiled the three finalist teams for its 2025 College Student Essay Contest.

The finalist teams are Matthew Sharretts and Samuel Brockelman from Connecticut College; Isabella Martinez and Skilee Soto from St. Mary’s University; and Rachel Gibson and Ella Pernsteiner from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The contest, titled ‘Captive Insurance Solutions for Today’s Risk Management Challenges,’ is sponsored by Hylant Global Captive Solutions (Hylant GCS).

Participants were tasked with exploring how captive insurance can serve as a cost-effective alternative for managing emerging and evolving risks. Each finalist team will collaborate with mentors from Hylant GCS to refine their essays for a final round of judging.

The winners will be announced during the general session at the CICA International Conference, held from 9-11 March in Tucson, Arizona.

In addition to receiving cash prizes, the winning teams will present their essays at the conference and have them published by the contest's media partner, Captive Insurance Times.

Dan Towle, president at CICA, says: “This contest is one of the highlights of our conference, seeing the sparks ignited in the student presentations.

“We give students an inside view of the increasing career opportunities in the captive insurance industry, how innovative it is, and the exciting challenges it offers.”

Anne Mare Towle, CEO of Hylant GCS, adds: “The captive insurance industry offers students an incredible opportunity to dive into a field shaping the future of risk management. Engaging students in this industry is crucial, opening various pathways for immediate employment and long-term career growth.

“It is encouraging to consider how their involvement can not only benefit their careers but also contribute to the overall development of the industry.”
