Democrat Patricia Kuderer in Washington and Republican James Brown in Montana have been elected as insurance commissioners following the US presidential elections on 5 November.
Kuderer will succeed six-term commissioner Mike Kreidler, who announced in May 2023 that he would not seek reelection.
According to AM Best, Kuderer plans to focus on creating an insurance system that prioritises people over profits, addresses rising insurance costs, increases competition, and enhances consumer protections.
Kuderer also aims to expand access to healthcare and disaster coverage in the state.
In Montana, Brown takes over from Troy Downing, recently elected to the US House of Representatives.
In a statement, Brown said he was humbled by the high level of support he received, adding: “Montanans chose to have a rendezvous with destiny, a destiny guided by the small government principles of the Republican Party to keep our Montana, Montana.”
Meanwhile, incumbents Mike Causey in North Carolina and Trinidad Navarro in Delaware will retain their positions, while North Dakota insurance commissioner Jon Godfread will continue his role after running unopposed.
