Brian Hall to receive 2018 Fred Reiss award

Brian Hall, the founding president of Bermuda Insurance Management Association (BIMA) credited with taking the island’s captive industry to global relevance, has been chosen to receive the 2018 Fred Reiss Lifetime Achievement Award.

Hall will receive the award at the Bermuda Captive Conference, which takes place on 11 to 13 June.

The award is named in honour of Fred Reiss, who conceived of the idea of self-insurance by which corporations could manage their own risks through a dedicated subsidiary, and launched the first captive in Bermuda in 1962.

During an insurance career spanning more than four decades on the island, Hall served as chair of the Bermuda College and the Insurance Advisory Committee and was founder and trustee advisor of the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies.

Having begun his insurance career in 1958, when he joined AIG at the age of 17, Hall became CEO and president of brokerage Johnson and Higgins in 1979, which merged with Marsh and McLennan in 1997.

Conference chair Mike Parrish said Hall was a true pioneer of Bermuda’s captive industry.

Parrish added: “His contributions to both insurance and educational organisations in Bermuda have demonstrated his long and sincere commitment to the island and generations of Bermudians who followed him into the industry.”

“Much of the success we enjoy as a sector today can be attributed to Bermuda-based entities he led and inspired.”

Hall stated: “I am overwhelmed to be receiving this award and am greatly honoured to be recognised after so many years of service.”

“I am incredibly proud of my fellow Bermudians in their success in bringing Bermuda to the forefront of the captive insurance world.”

The previous recipients of the award were Michael Burns, in 2017, and Jill Husbands, in 2016.
